World Change Starts With Educated Children
About us
Founded in 2000 on the belief that World Change Starts with Educated Children®, Room to Read is creating a world free from illiteracy and gender inequality. We are achieving this goal by helping children in historically low-income communities develop literacy skills and a habit of reading, and by supporting girls as they build skills to succeed in school and negotiate key life decisions. We collaborate with governments and other partner organizations to deliver positive outcomes for children at scale. Room to Read has benefited more than 32 million children and has worked in 21 countries and in more than 49,000 communities, providing additional support through remote solutions that facilitate learning beyond the classroom. Room to Read aims to benefit 40 million children by 2025. Learn more at www.roomtoread.org

“This month and beyond, we call upon all those in the media to join us on the front lines of change and march towards a more just future by creating a path for the next generation of girls to see themselves as protagonists in their own stories.” – Geetha Murali Read Geetha Murali’s full op-ed “The Front Lines of Change: Storytelling for Women and Girls” and help create change for girls around the world:
Since 1987, the world comes together in celebration of Women's History Month every March to recognize the strides we've made towards gender equality. Despite heartening social media tributes and optimistic discussions, discouraging headlines remind us of the harsh reality. With challenges on so many fronts, it is easy to question our belief in a better future. In my latest op-ed, I explore how narratives shape girls' identities and aspirations, offering hope amidst adversity. In response to the doubts we may have, my op-ed considers the power of storytelling to shape global discourse, offering hope for real change. The stories consumed by adolescent girls worldwide can validate their struggles and strengths, reinforcing their right to dignity and self-respect. While most media still perpetuate gender stereotypes and discrimination that limit girls' aspirations and life choices, we have the power to change this reality through the narratives we share. As storytellers, media professionals have the responsibility to be the change our world so desperately needs by sharing stories that encourage empathy, inspire change, and accurately represent the experiences of women and girls worldwide. With She Creates Change, Room to Read aims to do just that. This month and beyond, we call upon all those in the media to join us on the front lines of change and march towards a more just future by creating a path for the next generation of girls to see themselves as protagonists in their own stories. You can create the path for world change for just a $1 a day.
