Hunterdon County Surrogate Susan Hoffman Receives the Governmental Service Award from the Hunterdon County Chamber of Commerce. Every year, one award stands above them all. The people in the past who have won this award were flat out amazing people. On March 30th, another absolutely fantastic person joined the club of Honorees who have received this Award. Surrogate Susan J. Hoffman is a lifelong resident of Hunterdon County, having been born and raised in Lebanon Borough. After serving as Deputy Surrogate and then appointed to fill a vacancy, Susan won the Republican nomination in 1983 and has continuously been elected in five-year terms, now serving her eighth term as Surrogate of Hunterdon County. She is now the longest serving Surrogate in Hunterdon County History and the longest serving Surrogate in New Jersey. By itself, being the longest serving surrogate in a state is extremely honorary. Surrogacy creates relationships. Many intended parents become close with their surrogate and her family during the process, developing meaningful bonds that can last a lifetime. Surrogacy, despite being sad at times, allows thousands of people to live their life when disaster strikes. Susan is a recent past President of the Constitutional Officers Association of New Jersey. Susan sat on the board of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Hunterdon County, was a member of the advisory board to Visiting Health and Supportive Services and was a board Trustee for the Hunterdon County YMCA. Currently, she is an advisory board member of Volunteer Guardianship One on One, Inc., an organization she co-founded that recruits and trains guardians to be appointed for persons in the community who have no family. Susan is pretty much as close as you can get to an angel. Being at the awards breakfast to witness her receiving this award gave me goosebumps. Winning an award is meaningful, especially when talking about an Award presented by the county, but it is evident that Susan amounts to more than this award. Everyone present at the breakfast considered Susan as a role model. A role model in life. Prior to attending the ceremony, I was not quite aware as to what a surrogate was and what they did. After, I became fantasized with Susan’s art. Combing her profession with her angelic disposition, Susan qualified to win this award and the hearts of all the spectators. In addition, Susan is a trustee on the Dr. Orlie Pell Fund, a fund that bridges the gap as a discretionary fund to be used when there is no other help available. Susan can also be found speaking to various local civic organizations explaining the role of the Surrogate's Court. Susan and her husband, Larry Greene, reside in Kingwood Township where both are members of the Delaware River Mill society, an organization dedicated to preserving the local mill in Stockton, NJ. Congratulations Susan!
